Custard apples are a variety of the cherimoya. They are the size of an orange, with a rough, green skin. When custard apples are ripe, they turn a blackish-brown colour. Their flesh is white and juicy with a sweet-sour flavour. They have a rose-like scent.

Also known as the bullock's heart (because of its shape), the custard apple is the best known species of the cherimoya family. The custard apple originated in Peru and is now cultivated in tropical regions.
Custard apples may be cut in half or twisted open. They are chilled and served in halves and eaten fresh in the hand or with a teaspoon. They may used in sorbets and fruit salads.
Custard apples ripen at room temperature and should be eaten as soon as possible. They may be refrigerated if longer storage is required
